Chuck D:
Behind the Seen
March 1–31, 2018

Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee, Chuck D opens his first solo art exhibition at Gallery 30 South in Pasadena

Chuck D is a multi-platinum recording artist, a Rock And Roll Hall of Fame inductee, and a national treasure. Whether we’re talking hip hop or politics, Chuck is a revolutionary. With this, his first exhibition of fine art, the legendary frontman of Public Enemy and Prophets of Rage is poised to revolutionize the art game, too.

Though he graduated from New York’s Adelphia University with a B.F.A. in Graphic Design, Chuck D’s career as an internationally celebrated performer sidelined his visual art endeavors for the most part until recently. His unique access to the worlds of Rock and Hip Hop brings a courtroom sketch aesthetic to a here-to-fore undocumented aspect of pop culture history: the point of view of one who has lived it. Evident within these illustrations is a figurative adaptation of the assembled and poly-dimensional work of black Angeleno artists like Noah Purifoy and Senga Nengudi, with a distinctive, compositional sensibility that elicits equal parts Jack Kirby and Francis Bacon.

Much of the work in this exhibition has been completed while on tour, giving each an incomparable vitality and the unparalleled provenance of an instant entertainment artifact.

*This show has completely sold out, so please contact the gallery director to be added to the stand-by list for new, available work.

Chuck D‘s Behind the Seen is a co-production of Kate Kelton and Gallery 30 South.
