Charles Moriarty captures Amy Winehouse on the cusp of stardom from an intimate perspective.
Over 50 beautiful unseen images of the 19-year-old Winehouse are brought together in Before Frank.

Photographer Charles Moriarty, who shot the iconic cover for Winehouse’s debut Frank, unveils a unique and personal archive, shot between East London and New York in June and July 2003, before Winehouse transformed into one of the most successful singers on the planet.

“After 14 years it’s time for people to know the girl I knew; Amy before the fame, Amy before Frank”- Charles Moriarty

The litho printed and canvas bound book also features a foreword from Asif Kapadia, the director behind the Academy Award winning feature AMY, along with an introduction from Dazed’s arts and culture editor Ashleigh Kane and an interview with Moriarty by Martin Belk (author of Pretty Broken Punks).

“Over the years I have seen thousands of images of Amy, by brilliant photographers from all over the world, but Charles Moriarty’s photos stood out.” – Asif Kapadia

Before Frank is a timeless creation, capturing a remarkable period for one of music’s most significant figures, through photographs that are at once charming and heart- breaking.
Moriarty’s images have quickly made a transition into collective cultural memory, through both the iconic cover for Frank and now the National Portrait Gallery, where one of the images from this book sits in the permanent collection.
