Erick Laubach: NFT IRL

Erick Laubach: NFT IRL

February 4 – 25
Artist Reception: Sunday, February 20th 3-6PM

Erick Laubach was born in Berwick, PA and currently lives and work in Los Angeles. All of his paintings are done with acrylic paint on wood panels that require no framing and are ready to hang.

NFT IRL is a series of 16 original paintings and 16 NFTs created by artist, Erick Laubach. This collection features eight 36 x 48 in. and eight 18 x 24 in. acrylic paintings on wood panels, allowing the NFTs to be sold separately. Each painting is made with 516 squares (including the sides), using 10-18 different acrylics. Designed to look like a colorful geometric abstract up close and morph into a pop culture icon from a distance. Both sets are hand-painted, making the large and small paintings ever-so-slightly different.

Tip: In person, view them through your phone’s camera to magically make them come to life.

Erick’s paintings endow totems of pop culture with a distilled mosaic technique that takes a Mario Brothers hammer to the style of Chuck Close. While NFTs have been produced in virtually every style of render, the pieces most identifiable to the layperson are those that approximate the low-res animation of early videogame design, particularly those for the Nintendo Entertainment System consoles of the 1980s & 90s. This is the style that rose to prominence in 2-chan and 4-chan bulletin boards and gave birth to the modern meme as we know it.

The explosion of popularity (and headline-grabbing prices) of high-profile NFT artworks by Beeple and Bored Ape Yacht Club has reinvigorated interest in 8-bit inspired art even as the environmental impact of blockchain hosted and sold artworks has garnered critique. As more carbon-friendly and quite tangible physical paintings, Laubach offers a guilt-free and affordable alternative to collectors with an appreciation for the aesthetic without the necessity of complicated code-keys or crypto-wallets.

In fact, this public offering requires purchase by fiat currency or credit, as we are not accepting Etherium, Bitcoin, nor any other crypto-currency for purchase.

For those of you who wish to purchase these pieces as NFT’s only, we will refer you to the artist’s Foundation account: https://foundation.app/@cottonblend

Erick has been successfully selling his artwork online via Saatchi and other outlets for years, but this is his first physical gallery exhibition. All of the pieces in this show are unique, one-of-a-kind, hand-painted artworks.
