Linda Aronow was the manger of WACKO on Melrose during it’s heyday in the 80s and 90s when Punk was becoming New Wave, but the Post Punk sound was giving way to what would soon be termed Alternative Rock. On the weekends, kids flocked from East LA and the Valley to Melrose Avenue to buy their Doc Martens and Manic Panic hair dye, and Linda was everybody’s favorite Goth Shopkeeper. In the evenings Linda was busy documenting the live music scene of that era, and managed to capture still photos of the most iconic bands of the day over multiple gigs spanning over a decade. The collection of photographs that comprised her first-ever exhibition (CLICK TO ACCESS: A Punk Rock Primer: L.A. 1982 – 1992), included incredibly intuitive snapshots of Minor Threat, Henry Rollins and Black Flag, T.S.O.L., The Damned, Christian Death, G.B.H., Kommunity FK, Social Distortion, Alice Bag, and some of the first ever shows by the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

Linda’s sophomore exhibition was disappointingly canceled by the Governor of California’s mandated business closures in April 2020 due to the onset of the Coronavirus pandemic. So in keeping with our annual April Aronow Exhibitions, we’re going to be showcasing all of the images we had intended to showcase last year with even more images presented online. We’ve included below all of the photos from Linda’s first show, the selections intended for last year, and NEW exclusives, making this another incredible assortment of never before seen photos from L.A.’s Punk Rock Golden Age.

It is nothing short of extraordinary (and testimony to Linda’s dedication to the music and culture of the time) that new iconic images continue to emerge nearly 40 years after the fact, presenting a miraculous time capsule for this and future generations. All of the photographs that will be on display were shot with a Canon AE1 and developed in a darkroom by the photographer, herself. All are signed and numbered. For this exhibition we are offering each photograph in three size possibilities:

8×10 in. photographs are $250
11×14 in. photographs are $425
16×20 in. photographs are $650
