Online Exclusive

Mark Todd shows an ever deepening interest in deconstructing comic art from his childhood. Over the years his works seem to be getting more abstracted allowing more of a true collaboration with his idols Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko. His faux naive style reveals an understanding not just of the power of comic book iconography, but of the nature of memory. His earliest fascinations were comics and Star Wars, and in this collection of acrylic on wood paintings it is apparent that these two worlds of inventive fantasy still inform his art. Todd references the past, waxes nostalgic about it, and simultaneously lends his own post-modern sensibility to it by employing a limited palette, repetition, distortion and mixed media materials including spray paint, cel-vinyl, glossy varnishes and dusty stains.

Mark lives in Southern California with his wife and fellow artist, Esther Pearl Watson and their daughter Lili, an avid artist herself. Todd also co-teaches with Esther at Art Center College of Design, contributes to the curatorial program at Pasadena’s Sp[a]cE Gallery inside the Ayzenberg Group, and co-manages Joshua Tree’s Hey There Projects with fellow artist and Art Center Chair, Aaron Smith. He’s shown in museums and galleries worldwide, recently at Susanne Vielmetter, Los Angeles.
