28 Feb Soey Milk
Online Exclusive
With highly-refined and meticulously executed graphite drawings to complex, dreamlike oil paintings of ethereal young women suspended in fluttering robes of richly-patterned fabrics drenched in color, Soey Milk drifted onto the art scene like a sultry summer storm. These expertly rendered, euphoric scenarios entice viewers to yearn for understanding of Soey’s mysterious world. Her enchanting sirens and floating dreamscape imagery are common threads throughout her art, yet she is continually exploring and experimenting with surprising new mediums and methods. Her recent work has combined glitter and flower petals with oil paint. The subject matter presents a seductive and curious innocence that is a clear reflection of this talented ingénue. Sometimes playful, often contemplative, but always present is an essence of serenity and delicate beauty in these odes to femininity.
This incredibly rare collection of works on paper contains examples of her earliest exhibited pieces, from the rapidograph drawings from her first collegiate show in 2010 to her first museum exhibited painting (on a can of condensed milk) for the Andy Warhol tribute show, I Like Soup at the Virginia MOCA in 2012.
Soey Milk was born in Seoul, Korea, and moved to California in 2000. She is an exceptionally talented polymath, having also excelled in ballet and singing, before enrolling in Pasadena’s Art Center College of Design, where she graduated with BFA in painting and illustration in 2014. She is receiving significant international attention by collectors and has a vast following. Soey lives and works in California.
