Art is a visual expression of aesthetic and culture. But if we were to select a single form of media to represent culture as a whole, it would have to be literature. From Gutenberg’s press to the mass market and beyond, home libraries have indicated the level of one’s success and sophistication to others. The books on our shelves can say a lot about who we are. They are symbolic of belief, creed, education, specialty and even free speech.

The books in this curated collection run the gamut from controversial to esoteric and some are quintessential to their era of origin. Some of these books are historic, and some are hateful. There are books in this sampling that are older than any living human being and several have maintained a kind of influence probably never imagined by their author while others have been largely forgotten.
