Grey James’ paintings and mixed media works are concerned with the examination of specific motifs. His core subject is the male nude deepened with the evocation of solitude, simplicity, the truth found in silence and the observation and contemplation of the world: simple works presented without pretension are tremendously powerful.
Grey James exhibited for a decade as Jen Heaslip, his pre-transition persona. The subject matter was the same but small assemblage sculptures like this, which speak to gender in a more symbolic way, were transition pieces unto themselves. Originally exhibited at Edgar Varela Fine Arts in DTLA, this has been in a private collection since 2007. James’ paintings are generally large and start in the five-figure range, which make these an incredibly affordable alternative.
