Junko Fuji‘s pivotal importance in Toei’s decision to pursue a harder direction built around the wandering gambler genre is impossible to overstate. This entry in the Red Peony Gambler series was written by Kôji Takada, who had created the Quick-Draw Okatsu character and would go onto write the Street Fighter series as a vehicle for Sonny Chiba and win a Japanese Academy Award for writing the Hideo Gosha film, Yôkirô. Director Buichi Saitô directed Lone Wolf and Cub: Baby Cart in Peril the same year.
