Description

Robert Craig came under fire in 2016 when speculation about techniques utilized in the underpainting process and the artist’s own explanations about those processes caused a controversy that drove the already reclusive artist into total seclusion. Instead of damaging his market, demand and price increased as the artist disappeared and his paintings vanished from the art market. A viral documentary by pop artist Ron English bought even greater notoriety, and now Robert Craig paintings are incredibly rare. Paintings from 2014 to 2016 were the focus of some degree of consternation, but work from the preceding era have never come into question. This piece was recently examined under a loop and the canvas is 100% painted with a mix of acrylic and oil (and the occasional pencil stroke). Utilizing rubber erasers, airbrush and traditional brushwork gives this Robert Craig painting an other-worldly quality.
