Akan ni Hatsu (Suicide at Lake Akan) was a generation defining novel by Junichi Watanabe, comparable to The Unbearable Lightness of Being or The Handmaid’s Tale. The film, starring Junko Arashi and Tomokazu Miura (who won the Best Newcomer Award for his performance here) represents the cross pollination of Toei’s Pinky Violence and Art Theater Guild’s surreal and cerebral festival hits. While strictly neither, Akan is a sort of Japanese interpretation of Last Year at Marienbad, and the key art utilized a mock-canvas texture while embracing the fashion trend started by Meiko Kaji and Yumi Takigawa. Also notable is its award-winning score by Riichiro Manabe, who scored the Bloodthirsty Trilogy (Vampire Doll, Lake of Dracula, Evil of Dracula) as well as Cruel Story of Youth and controversial Pink films, Flower and Snake and Love Hunter. So contemporary is the art direction that it could be a movie poster from almost any of the last four decades.
Frame is not included. Poster will ship rolled in a tube.
