Ian Young:
Friendly Competition
The wildly over-the-top imagery in Ian Young‘s paintings perfectly capture the whimsical experience of playing the vintage videogames depicted in his incredibly detailed paintings. In the tradition of Joe Coleman by way of Kenny Scharf or Rodney Greenblat while maintaining his own unique vision, Ian is the son of celebrated Kansas City muralist, Michael Young, with whom he apprenticed as a young man.
This selection from his series, Friendly Competition, is a multi-layered tribute to popular video games of the classic era. Several of these acrylic-on-canvas paintings utilize fluorescent pigments that glow under black-light, adding another level of 80s nostalgia to this series steeped in the iconography of the arcade era.
