Pichação

Pichação

August 4 – 27, 2021

Exhibiting simultaneously with the also Portuguese-titled Os Párias (or The Untouchables) this extraordinary collection of Brazilian, Street-Art, Pichação, contains archival works from some of South America’s most prominent rising stars. Controversial in their own right, these artworks help to epitomize the evolving public opinion away from vandalism and toward fine art.

Pichação, sometimes misspelled as pixação, is the name given to Brazilian tagging done in a distinctive, cryptic style, mainly on walls and vacant buildings. Many pichação painters (known as pichadores) paint in difficult-to-access places, often risking their lives merely reaching their target locations. Pichação has been mostly condemned by the government and Brazilian society at large since it emerged in the streets of Brazil’s poorest neighborhoods. These street artists have been targeted by the country’s militant police and some of their contemporaries have been murdered without arrest, trial or conviction. These injustices have garnered a kind of folk support for elder pichadores since longevity is rare within the profession.

These scene originators graduated onto mural work, and some (like famed duo Os Gemeos), have earned museum exhibitions as Graffiti Legends. The artists in this survey found early fame in the streets of São Paulo, and have since become all-stars. Dask2 and Doc retain many elements of tagging in their gallery work. Binho Barreto has a PHD in Urbanism and his hometown of Belo Horizonte is like an open air museum for his many murals. Didu Losso is an internationally recognized curator, heavy metal musician, and street-wear mogul.

Most of these pieces were originally showcased in one of the first US exhibitions to feature Banksy work (at the Carmichael Gallery of Contemporary Art, 2007).
